How to get a transcript of text messages
People usually need this for one of three reasons: a court or legal matter, an HR or workplace complaint, or simply keeping a record. The right method depends on how long the conversation is and whether you have a computer. Here are the realistic options.
First: your carrier probably cannot help
Phone carriers keep records of when texts were sent and to which number, but in almost all cases they do not keep the content of your messages, or keep it only for a few days. iMessage and WhatsApp messages never pass through the carrier as readable text at all. Carrier records can show that a message was sent at a certain time; they cannot show what it said. For the words, you need the phone.

Screenshots into a transcript
Screenshot the conversation from oldest to newest with a little overlap between screenshots. A tool such as Court Texts then reads each bubble, works out who sent it from which side it sits on, picks up the dates and times that are visible, removes the repeated messages where screenshots overlap, and produces a numbered transcript with the original screenshots attached. This works for iMessage, Android Messages, WhatsApp, Instagram and anything else you can screenshot, and it needs no computer.
Printing from a Mac
If your iPhone messages sync to a Mac, open the conversation in Messages, scroll up to load the part you need, and choose File, then Print, then Save as PDF. It is free. The result is one very long page run with no message numbers, and it only works if iCloud syncing was already switched on.
Backup-based export
Desktop programs read a backup of your phone and export the conversation with the stored date, time and phone number for every message. This is the most complete record you can get yourself, and the strongest if the other side may claim the messages were faked, because it comes from the phone's database rather than from pictures of the screen.
What a good transcript contains
- Every message in order, numbered.
- Who sent each one.
- The date and time where they are known, and an honest note where they are not.
- A way to check each line against the original: the screenshots or the export attached.
- A short statement of who prepared it, when, and from what.
Common questions
Can I get a transcript of text messages from Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile?
You can get records of numbers, dates and times, but generally not the content of messages. Carriers either do not store message content or keep it only briefly, and they never see the content of iMessage or WhatsApp messages.
Can I get a transcript of deleted text messages?
Only if they still exist somewhere: in a phone backup made before deletion, on another synced device, or on the other person's phone. A transcript tool cannot recover messages that are gone.
Is a transcript of text messages accepted in court?
A transcript is a way of presenting messages, and it is normally accepted alongside the underlying evidence, such as the screenshots or export it was made from, with your testimony about where they came from. Whether any piece of evidence is admitted is decided by the court.
