How to send a text conversation to email

Published October 27, 2026

Short answer: one message is easy, a whole conversation is not. Phones let you forward or copy individual messages into an email. To email an entire conversation, the practical route is to turn it into one PDF and attach that. Both are below.

Forward one or a few messages from an iPhone

  1. Open the conversation, press and hold the message, and tap More.
  2. Tick any other messages you want to include.
  3. Tap the forward arrow and type an email address in the To field.

This sends through iMessage, so it reliably reaches the address only if that address is set up for iMessage, which is usually an Apple Account email. For anyone else, the dependable method is to copy instead: press and hold a message, tap Copy, and paste it into a new email in Mail or Gmail. Copying carries the words but not who sent them or when.

Forward a message from Android

In Google Messages, press and hold the message, open the menu, and choose to forward or share it. Sharing offers your email app, such as Gmail. Google Messages handles one message at a time; forwarding several together has been in testing but is not available to everyone. Samsung Messages has a similar share option. As on iPhone, copying a message and pasting it into an email always works.

Email a whole conversation as one PDF

Forwarding a long conversation message by message loses the order, the dates and who said what, and nobody wants to receive forty separate emails. A single PDF keeps all of it. From the phone, with no computer:

  1. Screenshot the conversation from the first message you need to the newest, letting each screenshot overlap the last a little. On iPhone, drag a bubble to the left before you screenshot to show every message's time.
  2. Upload the screenshots to Court Texts. It reads them into a numbered transcript, each message with its sender, date and time, and attaches the screenshots behind it.
  3. Email the PDF from the finished screen, or save it and attach it to any email.

The preview is free and reads the first ten screenshots at no cost; exporting the PDF is $19, once. It works for iMessage, Android texts, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Snapchat and group chats.

Other ways

Sending it to a lawyer, HR or a court

If the messages matter to a dispute, send the PDF rather than forwarded copies, keep the original conversation on your phone, and do not edit or crop the screenshots. A forwarded message shows the date you forwarded it, not the date it was originally sent. See how to prepare text messages for court.

Common questions

Can I forward an entire text conversation to email?

Not in one step from iPhone or Android; the Messages apps forward individual messages. To send a whole conversation, save it as one PDF and attach that. Court Texts builds the PDF from screenshots on the phone, and a Mac that syncs your messages can print a conversation to PDF.

Why won't my iPhone forward a text to an email address?

Messages sends to an email address through iMessage, so it only works if the address is registered with iMessage. For other addresses, copy the message and paste it into an email, or attach a PDF of the conversation.

Does a forwarded text show the original date and time?

No. A forwarded message arrives as a new message dated when you forwarded it. To keep the original dates and times, use screenshots, an export, or a PDF transcript that records them.

Can I automatically forward all my texts to email?

iPhones have no built-in option to forward every text to an email address. Some Android phones and third-party apps offer it. For a record of a particular conversation, saving it as a PDF is simpler and keeps the original dates.
