SMS Backup & Restore to a court PDF

Published October 13, 2026

On Android, the free route most people are pointed to is SMS Backup & Restore. It works, with two catches: there are two different apps with almost the same name, and the PDF you get is a plain list that still needs organising before a judge sees it.

Two apps, one name

Check the developer name on Google Play before installing. Both are free, with ads or in-app extras.

Getting the PDF

  1. Install the print-capable app and give it permission to read SMS. Make a backup first in whichever app you use; keep that XML file, it is the complete record.
  2. Open the conversation you need, choose the export or print option, pick PDF, and save it to the phone or Drive.
  3. Repeat for each conversation. Open the PDF and check the first and last messages against the phone, and that dates and times are present.
Already have the screenshots? Court Texts reads them and builds this for you, so you do not retype anything:

What the output is missing for court

The PDF is the raw conversation. For a hearing it usually needs: a cover sheet saying whose messages these are and the date range; numbered messages so anyone can say "message 14"; the whole exchange, not excerpts; and a way for the judge to check the printout against what the phone shows. SMS Backup & Restore gives you the content; it does not give you the structure, and it cannot include a picture of the conversation as it looked on the phone.

It also reads only SMS and MMS. RCS chats in Google Messages, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram are outside it.

Two ways to finish the job

Print the PDF and build the structure by hand. Number the pages, write a cover sheet, and prepare a short list of the messages you will rely on with their page numbers. See how to organize screenshots for court for the system; it applies to printouts too.

Or start from screenshots instead. Screenshot the conversation in Google Messages or Samsung Messages, overlapping each one with the last, and upload them to Court Texts. It reads the bubbles, numbers and dates each message, and builds a PDF with the transcript first and every original screenshot attached, so the judge sees both the typed version and the phone's own display. Free preview, $19 to export. It works for RCS, WhatsApp and any other app on screen, which the backup apps do not. It reads what is visible, so a time the app did not show is not invented.

Common questions

Can SMS Backup & Restore export text messages to PDF?

The backup app by SyncTech saves messages as an XML file; printing depends on the version. The separately developed SMS Backup, Print & Restore exports one conversation at a time to PDF, CSV, HTML or JPG. Check the developer name on Google Play.

Are SMS Backup & Restore printouts accepted in court?

Printouts of your own messages are routinely accepted when you can say they are accurate and complete and the court's filing rules were followed. The app does not change that either way; the person presenting them does. Keep the phone and the backup file in case of questions.

Does SMS Backup & Restore include RCS or WhatsApp messages?

No. It reads the phone's SMS and MMS store. RCS chats in Google Messages and messages in WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram are not included. Screenshots are the route for those.

How do I number the messages for court?

Either by hand on the printout, or by using a tool that builds a numbered, dated transcript from screenshots. Judges and lawyers refer to exhibits by number, so a numbering system matters more than which app made the PDF.
